3 Easy DIY Gift Wrapping Ideas

Sometimes, all you need to make a gift just a bit more special is by adding a personal touch to how you wrap it. Other times, you just want to do something fun with the family that the kids can also enjoy.

Here are 3 super easy do-it-yourself gift wrapping ideas that won’t break the bank or take half the day.

Idea 1: Crayon DIY

Works well for:

  • Gifts in boxes

What you’ll need:

  • Plain white or light brown wrapping paper
  • Pack of multiple crayons (3-4 per gift, pick different colours)
  • Clear tape
  • Twine or thin ribbon (optional)

Instructions:

Wrap all of your presents in the brown wrapping paper. Then, carefully tape 3-4 crayons to the bottom left corner of your presents. If you want, you can also wrap some twine or thin ribbon around your present. When the kids are ready to decorate, they can colour in the wrapping or leave messages for the lucky gift recipient!

Who says you need to spend time looking for fancy wrapping paper?

Idea 2: Lint roller painting

Works well for:

  • Gifts of any shape or size

What you’ll need:

  • Plain white or light coloured wrapping paper
  • Ink pad (choose your favourite colours!)
  • Lint roller (Tip: use an empty roll)
  • Craft foam
  • Glue (if you’re using an empty roll)
  • Clear tape
  • Twine or thin ribbon (optional)

Instructions:

Wrap your gift with the plain paper. Cut out the pattern you want to use. For our example, we’ve cut out stars to stick onto the lint roller. Stick the cut outs onto your lint roller (if it’s an empty roll, use glue). Roll your lint roller over the ink pad until it’s covered. Roll your pattern onto your gift! Finish off your gift with twine or ribbon.

Careful when you or kids are using the ink pad: wash your hands immediately afterwards so you don’t leave ink stains on your skin.

Idea 3: Bubble “printing”

Works well for:

  • Gifts of any size (looks best on box-shaped gifts)

What you’ll need:

  • Plain white or light coloured wrapping paper (pre-cut to fit your gift)
  • Food colouring (pick your favourite colours)
  • Bubble solution (you can make this at home using dish soap and water)
  • Straw(s)
  • Large baking dish
  • Table cover (optional but handy for keeping things from getting messy)
  • Clear tape
  • Twine or thin ribbon (optional)

Instructions:

Note: Before doing this project with kids, make sure they don’t swallow any bubble solution. Carefully supervise if they help out.

Prep your painting solution: Mix your bubble solution with 10-15 drops of food colouring in a baking dish (you may need more colouring so test on scrap paper if you think the colour isn’t strong enough). Use the straws to blow bubbles in the solution. Put your wrapping paper on top of the bubbles that form to create your pattern. Let your paper dry then wrap your gift!
