5 tips to create the perfect baby photos

Baby photography is nothing new. Our parents did it, our grandparents did it, and in today’s world of social media, any new parent, family member or friend is certainly creating and sharing photos of your newest addition to the family!

And this digital collection of photos and videos are going to be amazing years down the track.

But if you’re wanting to create something a little more special to capture your baby’s biggest milestones, you might need to get a bit creative.

Whether they are being shared online or printed in a photo book, there is a real art to capturing the perfect baby photos. And if you’re like us and what to have a go at capturing those moments yourself, we have some tips to help!

1. Location

Pick your location wisely. It’s kind of the foundation for your baby photo shoot.

There are a couple of things that you need to think about when it comes to where you’ll take the photos. The first is probably what you want the photos to look like. Busy backgrounds and no additional styling or simple backgrounds that you can add touches too. The second is whether you want every photo to look the same or whether you will be changing locations to change the look of the photos. The final consideration you need to make is lighting. If you’re just taking your shots from your phone – or if you have a camera but are just shooting in auto, make sure there is plenty of natural light around!

2. Outfit

Aside from you baby, the outfit you choose will be a focus point in your photos. Not only are they super tiny (can you believe we were once all that little?), but they are generally just super adorable. Plus they can really showcase the cheeky, sweet and fun personality of your bub.

Just like the background, the clothes you choose will really play into the look of the photo as a whole. So make sure you think about it along side your background and the things you use to style your shot!

If you’re not sure what to go for pastel colourings work really well in photos – you can’t really go wrong working with that!

3. Stying

This is where you can have even more fun with your photo shoot. Adding different textures, like a fur matt or a beautiful rug can really take your photos to a whole new level. But you can also use important elements relating to that milestone to bring the moment to life. Adding in items that have significance to the milestone like other photos, your bubs favourite teddy or toy, personalises the photos. And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous why not include the family pet (check out our blog full of tips for photographing unruly subjects).

4. Milestone cards

These are all the rage at the moment. Not only are they a great way to highlight your new bub’s milestone moments, but a cute way to make sure that you are not missing any of those big moments. We all know how quickly they change in those first couple of weeks and months. While there are plenty of these card to purchase online or in-store. If you want to get really creative, you could design and print your own. Canva is a great resource to get your design on. 5. Timing and distractions are everything

You know your baby best. So pick your photoshoot times around when you know they will be happiest. Maybe that’s while they are sleeping or after they have been fed. And if they are particularly unsettled have your distractions on hand. Keys, toys or maybe dad, another friend or family member who’s willing to pull a funny face to get that smile happening.
